Aimee's Bday

My wonderful husband got me these beautful fresh cut flowers and even made me a birthday cake for the first time! The cake making is a story in itself.

So he decides he wants to make a two layered cake. I thought that was very ambitious for his first time, but he said if he was going to make a cake then he was going to do it right. Now mind you, I asked him several times during the process if he wanted any help and he very firmly said no, that he was going to do this on his own.

I decided to take a shower while he started on the cake. I think it was the night before when he mentioned making this cake. He even mentioned using the two round glass dishes to bake the cake in. I said "glass dishes"? Do you mean pie plates? And he said yes. So I told him no, you don't use pie plates you need to use the two round cake pans. So he said okay. Now back to the morning he's trying to make it. I walked into the kitchen to get something to drink and notice he's having a hard time finding the cake pans. So I get down and pull them out from the back of the cupboard and hand them to him. Okay then, he says he's all set.

I get in the shower then and sometime later come back out into the kitchen. Well, he's got the mixer going in the bowl. I look in and see that it looks pretty thin and there isn't much there. I mentioned to him that it looked pretty runny and he agreed. He said he was supposed to mix it on medium speed for 2 minutes and he had the timer going on the microwave. I then asked him if he had put the cake mix in it yet and he said no, THAT's what he forgot! So we had a good laugh at that and I walked back out of the kitchen.

I didn't hear much coming from the kitchen a little while later and walked back in. At that point in time he wanted to know how to get the beaters out of the hand mixer. So I walked over and pushed the red button at the top of the thing and out they popped. Only, some small pieces of plastic also popped out of it. I looked down into the chamber where they were attached and one was all busted up. I was pretty shocked as I hadn't seen those break like that before. So I asked him if he had been trying to force them out. He says yes, but that he wasn't pulling too hard. Well, he must have been pulling hard enough to weaken the plastic anyway.

Here's a picture of the final product...

He did a really good job all in all and it tasted really good. I just need to go buy a new hand mixer now. :)
